Just replaced starter on Saturn sc1. Old started just spun without engaging engine. New starter does the same! Any Ideas. G A answered 6 years ago. I found that the purple solenoid wire is dead. Perhaps neutral safety switch or ignition switch. Starter is OK via the bench test Alex answered 6 years ago. Try starting the car while having someone check to see if the motor is turning over.
Theres also a chance that you got a bad starter out of the box. Yesterday I was driving and all of a sudden I heard a loud noise "starter" so I pulled over and turned the car off, the noise was still going so I turned the car back on and went home, after about I have a Saturns withmiles on it.
It goes through phases where it will start right up no problem. And then the tumbler will rotate but the starter doesn't engage.
Battery is fully cha I drove my sl1 to work now it won't start, no sound from the starter but everything in the car seems to work. I have a different car.

The thing is it is very random about not starting. It will drive well for days and then suddenly it will not start. If the car sits for a few hours, it starts back up. New Battery, the cables have been tightened, and the altenator has been checked as well as the starter. A friend of mine says it could be that my key is old and worn.
Any one heard of this? The mecanic seems to think it could be the fact that my tumblers are loose so that could be causing the problem. They have been loose for years though. The key feel out while I was driving about 4 years ago, car was still on.
That is all I can think about to describe the problem. Please help. Thank you Brian. If it's a physical interlock problem with your key won't turn, won't engage, etc.
You don't mention whether the car is cranking over but not starting. It sounds more to me like a crankshaft sensor problem - if the car cranks but won't start when it's hot, but will start after the engine cools down some, it may be that solid state sensor.
The sensor is located at the rear of the engine, up and behind the starter motor. There's a Richpin video about replacing it.Thank all of you for posting Mine currently will turn over but will not start. When the codes popped up I was running down the highway and noticed a loss of power. I got the car home and got the codes. Spark tested and confirmed as well. I replaced the coil and cleared the codes. All wires are showing sparks when tested, but now the car will not start.
Battery is showing I checked the CPS and that is showing ohms The ICM is brand new as well. Everything that was done within 30 - 45 days Plug Wires newly replaced Plugs are 6 or 7 months old and gaps check out at 0.

Can you hear the fuel pump run for a couple seconds when you turn the key to run? Originally Posted by bluesl2. Never assume anything when having engine problems otherwise you can just as well assume this problem doesn't exist!?
Replacing parts is one thing. The most problematic concern for S-series issues are the coolant sensor and its connectors. A new sensor with a corroded connector is the same as never replacing the sensor. The connector and circuit works at 5v and below so a fouled connector results in very rich running conditions. So rich that starting issues are the main problems along with flooding sometimes. Plug smelling is one way to ensure fuel is injected into each cylinder while a spark test rounds out a fuel and ignition test.
BTW, plug gaps should be 0. Its presumed that is what you meant. If the gaps are truly 0. A half inch gap will hardly allow spark to jump across but will jump through plug wires to the engine block instead.
Be sure of what the real gap is from a mistype. To review presently, is there spark on all four plugs and are they wet or smell of raw fuel? Originally Posted by fdryer. Do you. So when you try to start it does the starter make any noise? Sounds like a bad starter I know you had it tested and said it was good but if you check it when its working it tests good.
Its really common for the starter solenoids to fail on the starter on those cars cause random no starts. I havereplaced alot of them for that.
They usually dont fail because of too much draw which is what the starter tester tests for. Do you have a test light or multimeter? If you do I can tell you how to test it. Was this answer. No it made no noise at all. Ill have to get the starter removed and bring it somewhere to test it I dont have any of the equipment to do it at home.
Thanks so much Was this answer. By a bulb test light under 10 and I will help you test it no sense in remove the starter if its good. Its really easy to test with a test light.

The starter is at the terminus of a circuit that includes the battery, the ignition switch, a neutral safety switch, relays and fuses. When you turn the ignition key to start, or press the start button in some vehicles, the starter circuit is completed and the starter will run.
Most starters have a small pinion gear that engages a larger ring gear on the flywheel when the starter is powered on. The pinion gear turns the engine flywheel at about RPM. Since the flywheel is directly connected to the crankshaft, all engine components will then turn in sync and the engine starts. Starters are relatively durable but most will eventually fail in one or more of the following ways:. Once a vehicle engine is running, the starter is not in use.
Should you know or suspect a problem with the starter, it is best to have the problem repaired to avoid being left stranded.

Starters are relatively durable but most will eventually fail in one or more of the following ways: Intermittent operation of the starter. Starters can develop bad spots on the armature which will cause intermittent operation.
This causes the starter to work sometimes and other times when you turn the key nothing happens. Starter turns too slowly. Internal electrical and mechanical faults can cause the starter to draw too much current and in some cases the current drawn will exceed what the battery can supply. A consequence is the engine may not start as rapidly.
Unusual noises on starting. If you hear any type of grinding or other unusual noise while starting the engine, that should be investigated as the noise could reflect an internal starter failure or the noise could be due to pinion gear failure or flywheel ring gear damage.
In some cases, the first symptom of a starter malfunction is a complete failure of the starter motor. When I start my car it jumps up to rpms, after a few seconds it drops to aboutshould be around I took the throttle body off cleaned it, took the IAC off cleaned it and tested it and moves slightly, from what I am told thats all it is supposed to move. I also sprayed carb cleaner around vacuum lines, manifold and everywhere else I could think of to check for leaks.
I am out of ideas. If you have any it would be a big help. Do you. Do u have any codes? Also u could have the iac motor frozen in place causing the high idle let me know what u find. Louie Was this answer. The codes I ended up with were P, P, and P, the iac motor does not seem to be stuck, if you have any ideas let me know. Thx alot. Was this answer. Ur code p is cyl 1 missifire woulded cause a high idle code p I belive is a egr code remove ur egr valve check to see if it's leaking clean with some carb spray while u have it off.
Code p is high idle u know u have that problem. Most of the time I have seen that high of idle on those Cars has been a vaccuum leak or a stuck iac when it's idling high try tapping lightly where the iac motor is if it idles down then u have a bad iac motor use a little hammer and don't go crazy.
Also u might have a bad coolant sensor that could cause a high idle but usually not that high but they are under 10 at the auto parts store if u replace only use a brass tip one not a plastic tip one.
